Philippine Hospitality is one of the characteristic that stands out among Filipinos. This is a common trait that Filipinos are known for, especially to most foreigners who have traveled around the country. They will even go out of their way to ensure guest feels comfortable. I remember my mom would have a set of towels, blankets and other stuff prepared and reserved for visitors, given that we don't have much of those for us to use. But it is a primary and mandatory custom. Although we are not the only people in the world who can be friendly and welcoming, but this characteristic is exceptional among us. Actually, there's no country in Southeast Asia where foreigners are so well welcomed as in the Philippines. I know, Thailand, Japan or China are also hospitable, but remain distant. Compare to the Filipino hospitality where in our smile is not politely distant, it is spontaneous and from the heart.

What really makes "Philippine Hospitality" exceptional? Here are some concrete examples of our hospitality. Filipinos welcome guests with open arms with the very famous phrase "feel at home" and if for some foreigners the usual greetings is "how are you?" with Filipinos it's always "Have you eaten already?" they want to make sure that you're okay and feels comfortable. This is very visible, especially if you arrive in a Filipino home during mealtime, it's awkward for some other country but for them you will be welcomed and will be asked to sit down and share what they have on the table. Because eating alone or by themselves without asking others is considered rude in Filipino customs. Considering the srtuggling economy and rising poverty in the country, anybody will be surprised on how Filipino handle such situations. Yes, even the humblest home along the road and people live in shanties can serve as a shelter for an unexpected visitor or a stranger who has lost his way.

So, for us Filipinos, entertaining visitors and serving other people the best that we can, gives us honor and a promise of true friendship. Is what Filipino hospitality is all about.
